I celebrate my Bar Mitzvah with Zakharia in his memory, to ensure that he is not forgotten, and have also honoured Zakharia with a place on the Yad Vashem wall on their website.

Zac celebrated his Bar Mitzvah on
1 July 2023 at Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue

I want to take a moment to tell you that I decided to ‘twin’ my Bar Mitzvah with a young child who was, so very sadly, a victim of the Shoah, and was not able to celebrate his special occasion.

Zakharia Moshe Scheuer, was born in Katowice, Poland in 1930 to Yosef and Golda. Before World War 2 started, Zakharia had been a pupil in a school in Katowice. When the war broke out, he and his family moved to Sosnowiec before tragically being taken to Auschwitz.

Joshua twinned with Josua Boesenach who was born in June 1931. He was deported age 12 to Auschwitz and murdered in a gas chamber. He never got to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah. “As I celebrate my Bar Mitzvah he will be on my mind."

I had my Bat Mitzvah in July 2019. For my Bat Mitzvah, I twinned with Yad Vashem UK Foundation. They twinned me with a girl named Alice Chana Grunwald, a surname that my family also used. Sadly, Alice Chana did not survive to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah, as she perished at Auschwitz.
