It is our honour to remember Akiva and Alice, and may their memory be a blessing.
Sophia celebrated her Bat Mitzvah on
11 November 2023
In honour of my Bat Mitzvah, I have taken part in the Yad Vashem twinning project. I was twinned with Alitza Fruma Mimi Shlezinger – Alice. Alice was born in Ottomani in Transylvania in about 1930, which was then Romania but is now part of Hungary. Her parents were Malka and Benjamin.
Alice and her family were moved to the Ordaea ghetto, before being taken to Auschwitz sometime between 16 May and 27 June 1944, where Alice and all of her family were murdered.
Usually the Yad Vashem project twins you with someone under bar or bat mitzvah, but Alice was 14. Although she was past her Bat Mitzvah, she was not able to celebrate it because of the dark times she was living in. So I will share my celebration with her. I was also twinned with Alice because, my brother Jacob was twinned with her brother, Akiva Shlezinger for his Bar mitzvah.
